This mourning needlework sampler is attributed to Lydia Little, born in 1790 in Marshfield, Mass. Educated in a well-to-do family, Lydia created this piece after 1803—the year her father died—when she was in her early to mid-teens. Her ornamental needlework incorporates classic elements of mourning art: the willow tree, an obelisk, and grieving family members.
