This image comes from an album containing 29 cartes de visite of members of the Association of Officers of the 55th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. The 55th Regiment was one of Massachusetts's two Black infantry regiments during the Civil War and was created after the more famous 54th Regiment. The 55th took part in campaigns in Georgia, the Carolinas, and Florida. This is the only carte de visite of a Black soldier in an album made up for the most part of photographs of the 55th Regiment’s white officers.
